Taxonomic experience
Hymenoptera: Particular expertise in sawflies. Good knowledge of aculeates. Developing experience of Parasitica.Â
Diptera: Good knowledge of most of the better-known groups, with reasonable experience of most other famiies also.
Coleoptera: Good knowledge of most families; access to literature for almost all UK species.
Hemiptera: Good knowledge of Heteroptera and many Auchennorrhyncha. Some experience with Psylloidea.
Lepidoptera: Excellent knowledge of butterflies and moths, including most micro-moth groups. Good knowledge of larval stages.
Odonata: Excellent knowledge of adult insects, with some experience of larval stages also.
Orthoptera: Good knowledge of most species, able to survey many by ear.
Other insects: Good broad knowledge of most other insect groups, although only limited experience to date with aquatic larval stages.
Arachnids: Good knowledge of spiders, harvestmen and pseudoscorpions.
Other terrestrial invertebrates: Good knowledge of myriapods, woodlice, molluscs. Less experience with worms.
Other freshwater invertebrates: Moderate experience to date.
Marine life: Limited experience to date.
Birds: Excellent knowledge of all UK species by sight and sound; wide knowledge also across Europe, Middle East and further afield. Excellent knowledge of survey techniques.
Mammals: Good knowledge of diurnal species, although less experience with bats and small mammals to date.
Amphibians/Reptiles: Good knowledge of UK species.
Fish: Limited experience to date.
Vascular plants: Good level of knowledge in general. Probably FISC level 4 (although not tested yet).
Bryophytes: Limited experience to date.
Fungi: Limited experience to date.
